This paper discusses the lubrication aspects of a neat methanol fuelled small 2-stroke SI engine in comparison with gasoline fuelled engine. In the first phase, work was carried out to assess the anti-tightening properties of a two stroke methanol fuelled engine. Three lubricant formulations known to be miscible with the methanol were evaluated through laboratory engine tests. In the 2nd phase, 22 hours and 160 hours cyclic tests were devised and conducted for evaluating their wear and deposit forming characteristics. It was found that the anti-tightening characteristics of methanol fuelled engine were superior to the gasoline fuelled engine, thereby, rendering the former to operate reliably at higher temperatures without tendencies towards piston seizure. The engine deposits were generally lower; however, the top ring wear was higher with the methanol engine. Methanol compatible lubricants which satisfactorily address the lubrication problems of neat methanol fuelled two stroke engines were identified through laboratory engine tests.
