The major obstacles for industrial production of ethanol as fuel are large capital investment and high manufacturing costs. When a sugar material is used the two most important components of manufacturing costs are raw material and capital costs. In this paper sweet sorghum is proposed as raw material for ethanol production. This sugar crop has distinct advantages over sugar cane. The estimated cost of fermentable sugars from sweet sorghum is lower, compared with that of fermentable sugars from sugar cane. In order to reduce sugar extraction costs, the application of a heterogeneous phase fermentation process was studied in which extraction and fermentation of sugars present in sweet sorghum chips occur simultaneously. Experiments in flasks using dried and fresh chips were conducted to select the sweet sorghum variety, investigate drying as a preservation method and study the influence of certain process variables on the most significant parameters from an economic point of view. The results obtained in this study support the validity of this process at flask scale.
