The continued growth of composites in airframe manufacturing has created new material challenges in the area of film adhesives. One such challenge is for films used as surfacing veils on carbon fabric structures. These films are positioned and cured on the tool side of the part and are used primarily for improving surface quality of the component. However, even with the currently available surface films in place, costly pre-painting surface preparations are usually necessary. This paper describes a unique, proprietary film, in which a blend of fillers and resins have been optimized to produce an enhanced composite surface which is environmentally resistant. The uniqueness of this film is its ability to eliminate core imprints and porosity on the surface of co-cured, honeycomb stiffened, composite parts. Additionally, this new surfacing films seems to immobilize the core so no movement or squeezing can take place. The consequence is an effective method for transferring the tool surface characteristics onto the composite part surface.
