Motor vehicles of the future will be robot built and of hybrid construction, comprising metals and plastics. This means that there will be a greater use of adhesives to join such dissimilar materials and consequently a wider range of adhesives and sealants will be required. The use of multi-component and hot melt adhesives will be of benefit especially for the bonding of plastics for which the current heat curing types are inappropriate. The problems that have prevented these being used in the past can be easily overcome by a combination of robots and modern adhesive application equipment. When designing robots installations for the application of either new adhesives systems or the conventional products a number of factors must be considered. These are briefly reviewed.
