An alternative design sensitivity analysis of an automotive body structure is described in the paper. The method is based on Castigliano's theorem, and it requires only information on strain energy distribution. The efficiency of the method and numerical results are discussed. The computing cost using the present method is independent of the number of design variables, hence, the efficiency appears to compare favorably with other methods. In addition, it offers advantages of both simple integration using existing finite element programs (i.e. MSC/NASTRAN) and a potential for extension to non-linear problems.
