This paper describes features of the newly developed vertical pressure die casting process and its applications to automobile components. The new vertical pressure die casting process has been developed by improving on the squeeze casting process, to efficiently produce automobile components possessing high strength and pressure tightness. Compared with the conventional die casting process, the advantage of the newly developed process is the production of casting products without internal defects by the application of reliatively low pressure to molten metal as it enters the cavities, exclusive of air. The quality of products is guaranteed by the use of monitoring equipment installed in the system. In order to discover what factor is responsible for increasing strength, the tensile strength has been investigated by testing pieces cast by both the conventional process and the newly developed process. The relationship between the tensile strength and the internal defects, and the relationship between the tensile strength and the solidified microstructure have been clarified. Consequently, the strength is extremely affected by the degree of internal defects. Therefore, aluminum alloy casting has been widely applied to automobile components because of the higher strength of products using the newly developed process. The typical applications to automobile components produced by the developed process are as follows: power steering component, in which the property of pressure tightness is needed; engine valve rocker arm, in which the property of strength is needed; and the piston for diesel engines, which is reinforced by ceramic fiber to achieve the wear resistance of the piston ring groove.
