Development of injection molded and sintered silicon nitride ceramics is continuing at GTE Laboratories for application in engine components. Both small (CATE axial turbine blades) and large (AGT 100 rotor) cross-section parts have been fabricated with good maintenance of geometry. CATE blades failed at an average of 136 % of design speed in cold spin tests. They also exhibit good oxidation resistance. Fabrication of AGT rotors by sintering is currently limited by burnout cracking. Progress has been made in controlling these cracks. Preliminary experiments show that hot isostatic pressing can eliminate macroscopic internal flaws from AGT rotors.
