Today an optimum value for rolling resistance seems to emerge for an aspect ratio of 0.65. This value is obtained using an SR type construction i.e. one casing ply and two crown plys. A slight shift in this figure is possible if the effect of the tyre width on the SCd (frontal area S x drag coefficient Cd) and of the additional weight of the tyre and wheel assembly are taken into consideration. Both these factors will need to be analysed with vehicle manufacturers who could help to minimise the effect on the SCd by a suitable wheel cover and/or wheel arch design.
