This report provides guidelines and recommendations for the shipboard treatment and conditioning of fuel oils. Four different types of propulsion systems with a broad range of fuels are considered in this study. Specifically these are; Steam Turbine with 6000 SR1 fuel, Slow Speed Diesel with 3500 SR1 and 1500 SR1 fuels, Medium Speed Diesel with 3500 SR1, 1500 SR1, and 800 SR1 fuels, and High Speed Diesel with 400 SR1 and Marine Diesel Oil (MDO). The quality of the fuels considered is that which is expected to be delivered as marine bunkers in the late 1980's and 1990's. The characteristics of these fuels are discussed in detail in this report. Fuel systems diagrams for each propulsion plant and fuel type considered are presented. The diagrams clearly indicate those components recommended for the onboard treatment of the fuel pols. The supporting rationale for the systems' configurations and components is provided. Additionally, conditioning recommendations for fuels with certain extremely degraded characteristics are provided.
