The closed loop cooling water system on an offshore production platform was found to be so badly fouled with corrosion product that the operation of the whole process was seriously threatened. A means had to be found whereby the system could be chemically cleaned while still on-line, taking full cognizance of the limitations found in the offshore situation. After some investigation into the matter it was decided that an acidised chelating agent, namely EDTA would be the most cost effective and risk free method to achieve this.
