This paper describes development and demonstration testing requirements for the next family of transport engines. It includes propulsion system performance and functional testing with emphasis on performance. Rationale is provided for the major tests required. The testing requirements identified herein reflect experience gained in the L-1011 program. The paper stresses the need for integrated, closely coordinated test programs involving the airframe and engine companies. The test concepts, objectives, and definition of what constitutes performance demonstration are agreed before the airplane program go-ahead. Responsibilities for the various tests are assigned to the engine and airframe companies as appropriate. The requirement for correlating ground and flight propulsion performance results is discussed. Finally, examples of propulsion testing during the L-1011 development program are described. (Wassmann)
