The rattling noise is most significant in many kinds of manual gearbox noises, which is generated at the idling stage of the engine operation; this stage means that a car is at rest and the gearbox is in neutral. In this report, results of our simulation analysis and experimental studies of this rattling noise are introduced. From the simulation results, it was found possible to reduce this rattling noise by optimizing the torsional characteristics of the clutch plate. This result was verified by a laboratory experiment. Applying the result into the actual passenger car, we succeeded in decreasing the rattling noise to the acceptable level. (Peters)
