The paper describes the influence the designer can have on the subsequent operating costs of the vehicle, with particular emphasis on the four axle rigid type chassis and the introduction of new and improved design features. These features included lower quantities of component parts, extended or abolished maintenance periods, improved fatigue life and related effects on associated units, lower weight and improved design performance. Specific areas covered include: suspension, where the traditional use of leaf springs of various configurations for rear bogies was compared with other sprinnging media and a design produced based on rubber; driver's cab, where a composite construction was developed to provide the working environment demanded by today's operators; and the electrical specification, where attention to detail was pursued to identify and remove the source of commonplace, persistent electrical failures. Further items for consideration are also referred to, emphasising the necessity for continued review of design. (Peters)
