The deck structures of RO-RO ships usually consist of a grillage structure made up by deck transverses and deck girders. When loading trailers or containers, the weight of the edges of the containers or the axles of the trailers are directly acted upon some of the deck transverses. Part of the weight on the deck transverses is transferred by the deck girders. The position and the rigidity of the girders determines in main the strength of the deck structures. In this paper, a method of calculating the approximate strength of the deck structures is outlined. The numerical results obtained with this new method have been found to be in agreement with those obtained from a grillage analysis with a computer program. Optimum positions and the scantlings of the deck girders are investigated using the newly developed method. (Wassmann)
