This paper outlines the results of an investigation conducted on semi-membrane tanks which were to be installed in the 82800 m 3 LPG carrier, which had been constructed by Hitachi Zosen. Structural analysis of the essential structural components i.e. - the flat shell plating, cylindrical shell plating, spherical shell plating and the connecting section of the tank dome - were carried out using the classical beam theory and the finite element method of analysis. This analysis brought to light such factors as deformation, mechanism of load transmission, stress distribution and so forth. For points for which this analysis indicated relatively high levels of stress, the strength of the tank was assessed in terms of fatigue strength, critical crack length and buckling strength. This study has clearly determined the fundamental characteristics of the semi-membrane tank and convinced the authors that Hitachi Zosen's semi-membranes LPG carrier displays sufficient structural safety.
