Disturbance forces or friction in a fuel metering device can limit the performance of a precision speed control system. A measure of the effect which these forces can have is given by the compliance rating of the speed governor throttle positioning mechanism. This paper presents an evaluation of the compliance rating for two different types of speed governor. A speed governor with an electrohydraulic servo motor and a speed governor with an electromagnetic solenoid to position the throttle are considered in this analysis. For an electromagnetic solenoid governor the advantages of position feedback and current feedback upon dynamic performance and compliance rating are demonstrated. When friction is present in the throttle assembly, a deadband is introduced into the speed control system. The effect of the speed governor compliance rating upon this deadband is shown. (Wassmann)
