A general method for calculating emissions from and fuel consumption of cars with spark ignition engines is described. A dynamic simulation model of a single car, including the driver in a closed loop system, is developed. This model gives the instaneous emission rates and is used to determine corrections of emission factors, measured using for example the ECE 15 driving cycle, and to study the effect of changes in the design of cars. Further, a prognosis model is developed in order to study the long term effects of changing emission characteristics of a car population. The models are used to show the influence on fuel consumption and emissions of various control strategies, like changes in driving patterns, future emission standards and new technology (the use of continously variable transmissions).
