An element based on the Vlasov beam theory is developed for the dynamic analysis of structures. The beam element has 3 nodes, 21 degrees of freedom and it is applicable to thin or thick beam structures with open or closed cross sections. The effect of shear and warping deformations, and rotary and warping inertias is considered. A torsion element is also developed to evaluate the torsional properties required by the beam element. The torsion element is a curved isoparametric parabolic element with 8 nodes and 8 degrees of freedom. The elements are applied to the dynamic analysis of beam and shell structures. The predicted natural frequencies are compared with analytical and other finite element solutions. The influence of the shear and warping deformations, and rotary and warping inertias on the dynamic analysis of structures is investigated. The element is applicable to a wide range of structures, such as ship structures, turbine blades and structures with variable cross section area. The analysis of such complex structures can be performed in small computers.(Wassmann)
