Peltier elements can work as a refrigerator/heat pump, as a heat flux or temperature regulation system, supporting or hindering a heat flux up to 'stop-cock'-function. Design definition studies of Spacelab experiments based on Peltier elements cooling units (incubators freezers for bio-rack) have been carried out. A breadboard cooling unit including 20 Peltier elements has been developed and tested to demonstrate its capability and to verify the lay-out calculation. These Peltier elements have the disadvantage, that in case of an electrical current breakdown, the elements acts as an heat conductor. In order to avoid these reverse heat flux, a heat pipe diode (liquid trap) is located between the cooled device and the Peltier elements. Design and test results of this heat pipe diode will be presented. (Wassmann)
