Strict adherence to automotive paint process standards is mandatory in order to achieve quality and cost efficiency. The continuing proliferation of plastic substrates is the result of industry demands coupled with government mandated change. Development of the materials and processes to coat these substrates clearly demonstrates the vital function of the automotive materials laboratory. Determination of cleaning details, necessity of priming, the type of color coat material, and the baking temperature must be finalized prior to production release. Formulation of the engineering standard is discussed and a case study analyzed of a plastic exterior quarter window louver. (Wassmann)
