The use of a nuclear reactor for propulsion power gives to an icebreaker a unique operational capability, and at the same time simplifies the task of demonstrating safety and licensability as compared with the ordinary merchant ship case. The choice of plant type lies between the integral and conventional dispersed versions of the pressurised light water reactor. There are a number of national ship safety codes with varying requirements in some cases, for provisions to deal with aspects such as containment, collisions, grounding and plant inspection. Ease of maintenance is an essential plant characteristic and extensive safe operating experience of land-based and marine PWR plant, including core and primary circuit components, is evidence of an established safety position. It is concluded that the conventional dispersed PWR is most likely to meet safety and safety related criteria in an incebreaker application. (Stoehr)
