Among various advanced intra-urban transit systems, a cable-monorail system in which running vehicles are suspended from a cable has many advantages. In this system, the cable may be practically assumed to be a string. Most of the studies on traveling loads along a string carried out so far have employed Fourier expansions to describe the motion of the string, but this method is impractical in cases of variable boundaries. This paper presents a new method for simulating the motion of the cable based on the characteristics of wave motion. A newly developed computer simulation program reveals the dynamic characteristics of vehicles and the factors which prevent these from being speeded up. A countermeasure is proposed to overcome this disadvantage. This paper also presents a method of determining fundamental parameters for the system taking both ride quality and safety into consideration.
