A continuous graphite fiber reinforced epoxy composite (GrFRP) wheel was designed and fabricated for the 1979 GrFRP Ford experimental vehicle. The wheel was designed to meet all dynamic laboratory tests including the most critical SAE impact test. The design process included checking of the safety margin in each layer of the laminates. Test results were in close agreement with those predicted. The GrFRP wheel weighed 9.8 lbs., a weight savings of 45 % as compared to the basic stamped steel wheel.
