The development of an automatic control system for a conventional transmission was begun in 1974, using a gearbox with mechanical synchromesh. A feasibility study mock-up was produced from discrete components and MSI integrated circuits, and comprised an analogue section and a logic section. The feasibility of this solution was confirmed in 1976, and the introduction of microprocessors and associated circuits indicated that it might be possible to produce this type of system on a commercial scale. A study was undertaken with a view to defining the hardware and software aspects of such equipment. This study was completed at the end of 1977, and the results are published here. The study was financed by the DGRST. (Wassmann)
