There is a continuing effort devoted to developing a variety of pod-mounted avionics systems for use on military aircraft. These pods require thermal control systems to maintain the proper avionics temperature environment throughout the ground and flight operational envelope. Design requirements and constraints are discussed, along with various possible cooling approaches and procedures for system selection and analysis. Descriptions of the thermal control systems used on several current pod-mounted avionics systems are presented. Some of the problems encountered with current systems are discussed and ideas are presented for improving the thermal control-systems on future pod-mounted avionics systems. (Wassmann)
