Graphite composites offer tremendous structural weight savings for high performance surface ships such as hydrofoils. One area of prime interest due to its high payoff is in the basic strut and foil system. This paper discusses the environmental behavior of graphite/epoxy composites under long term exposure to salt water. Samples were exposed for periods up to 7 1/2 months in a stressed and unstressed condition and evaluated. Correlations between laboratory exposure and actual sea water exposures were made.
