The critical applications of gas bottles in space technology are described along with the various manufacturing processes including their merits and demerits. The special advantages for using magnesium alloy gas bottles are brought out with major emphasis from the attractive aspects of manufacturing such airborne components by welding the cast halves. Particular mention is made of the enormous scope for the optimisation of fabrication parameters from the economic production point of view. Successful experiments on avoiding the usage of costly inert gas for welding magnesium alloy components hold further promise towards additional reduction of the total expenditure in the production of space-qualified magnesium gas bottles.
