This paper discusses the application of ultrasonic inspection techniques to the weld joining brace pipes to leg pipes at various intersection angles in offshore platform structures. Consideration of a term known as the local dihedral angle allows proper selection of inspection angle, search unit placement location, and scan path dimensions for each circumferential region of the weld being scanned. The complexity of this inspection is high-lighted with recommendations concerning the necessary parameter controls required to provide an adequate inspection of the weld area. (Peters)
