This paper briefly traces the evolution of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) technology in General Motrs. The shift in emphasis from batch mode CAM systems to interactive graphic systems is explored and the mini-computer based graphic system for body tooling is detailed. Accomplishments to data are summarized and an attempt is made to forecast future effects of this system on our CAD/CAM efforts.
