The introduction of a new generation of reheat steam turbines for marine propulsion plants prompted by the rapid rise in fuel oil costs should not be achieved at the expense of reliability. In this connection the experience gained from problems previously encountered should be considered when planning for future requirements. This paper describes some of the sophisticated techniques of measurement, and computer-aided analysis which have been used in the past in diagnostic investigations on problems in steam turbine plants.
