Traditionally railway rolling stock has been manufactured using steels, and this has been influenced by the cost of maintenance, availability of materials, and design. Noew, with radical changes in design concepts, a change has been made to the use of aluminium using modern automatic welding processes in railcar construction. Factors influencing this choice of material include lower costs, efficiency of equipment and weight. (Schuchardt)
