Proposes the algorithm of the automatic identification and tracking of a preceding car aiming at intelligent system development of automatic driving. The authors propose a couple of methods: one is to take out the preceding car by extracting only symmetrical components, taking advantage of the fact that the rear view of the preceding car is symmetrical; and the other is the modelling of the characteristics of the lateral contents by making the use of the fact that the rear view of the car is composed mainly of lateral components. Furthermore, the authors show two matching algorithms based on the dispersion of the y-coordinate difference for the lateral component characteristics, and the result of the actual recognition test of the preceding car on a highway.
