Testing batteries in both the laboratory and in vehicles is an important part of evaluating new batteries and electric drivelines for electric vehicles. A methodology is presented for group testing of battery cells/modules utilizing computer controlled charge and discharge profiles and data acquisition and analysis. The terminal voltage and temperature of each module is measured and stored during sampling sweeps. The voltage and temperature of the pack are also measured before and after each sweep. A discussion is given of possible test procedures and data analysis. It is proposed that constant-current and constant-power discharges be performed to determine the standard deviation, sigma, of the terminal voltage distributions as functions of current, power, and depth-of-discharge.
