With the introduction of increasingly complex electronic systems, the task of performance validation, fault detection and isolation are becoming more essential and more difficult. Maintenance of complex weapons system, in particular, is of vital importance because self-sufficiency is a precondition for the survival of any military force. A general-purpose tester with automatic diagnostics would increase combat readiness by enabling comprehensive flight-line testing of complex weapons systems. The author describes the portable, MIL-STD, computerized organisational-level tester (COLT) developed by RADA Electronic Industries Ltd. The COLT ATE uses both digital and analog testing, all in a package compact enough for a technician to take into an aircraft's cockpit.
