To develop a lighting protection system for aircraft, an investigation of the lightning discharge channel over the surface of the aircraft is important. The motion of the channel of an impulsive discharge of positive polarity between stationary high-voltage and rotating earthed electrodes is investigated. A method is developed for investigating the spatial and time characteristics of the moving discharge by photoscanning. The phenomena are described from photographic, high-speed cinephotographic and photoscanning data. It is found that a channel reference point can move stepwise or creep continuously over the moving electrode surface. The nature of the motion and the spatial and time characteristics depend on the material, the surface condition of the moving electrode and the discharge current, and they are practically independent of the velocity of the electrode.
