A portable intelligent data logger supplied by Systematic Micro is being used by British Rail at Derby to speed the monitoring and analysis of a wide variety of mechanical and electrical parameters relating to tests on locomotives and other rolling stock. The logger is the Model CR7, a rugged, battery-operated system which is easily programmable for compatibility with a wide range of sensors, as well as providing extensive analysis and communications capabilities. In the British Rail experiments, which cover some of BR's latest diesel locomotives as well as electrical multiple units and high-speed trains, the logger is used to capture data onto its built-in cassette tape recorder. The data is then processed and analysed on an on-board Hewlett-Packard HP9845 desktop computer, which can produce graphs or tables of the results very rapidly.
