Rolling stock using electric traction, is increasingly being equipped with static (as opposed to the previously used rotary type) converters. They provide DC and/or AC supplies of various voltages for auxiliary services such as traction motor excitation, ventilation, battery charging etc. and are now electronically controlled. The range of converters made by TCO are tabulated and applications are listed. Their general functional and control principles are then outlined with examples. Protection and reliability and some constructional features such as weight reduction and cooling are examined.
