Voice command techniques can be applied to motor car instrumentation. A complete system has to be able to listen and understand as well as issue speech. The design of a suitable equipment requires a knowledge of the properties and characteristics of human speech. Such characteristics are discussed with the aid of a simplistic equivalent circuit diagram. The analysis of speech in terms of phonemes and formants is looked at; the production of vowels and consonants and representative frequency spectra are considered. On this basis a simple analogue formant simulator is put together to illustrate how the various important parameters are inter-related. Modern designs use digital techniques; a circuit using these is looked at. The basic design and structure of a memory to store the fundamental information for such a design - signals, data string and pitch word - are also examined and illustrated with a block diagram; the programming of such a memory is covered briefly. The direct storage of phonemes derived from speech itself is considered in terms of National Semiconductor's 'Digitalker'.
