Netherlands Railways (NS) adopted the new BMS track recording system in 1983. This is a non-control system based on the inertial measuring principle. This type of system has two big advantages when compared with conventional methods involving feelers in contact with the rails. In the first place there is no wear, as there are no mechanical transducers. This achieves a major saving, as 90 per cent of the maintenance costs of a conventional track recording system are due to the mechanical transducers. The second advantage lies in the much larger measuring range (BMS records wavelengths up to 70 m) and in the undistorted recording of the track geometry. A brief description of the system in given.
