The 1980s will see fiber optics applied to every segment of the electronics and communications industry all over the world. This growth will follow from the component developments for fiber optic systems, which have resulted in reduced fiber cable losses from around 1 db/m at the start of the '70s, to 1 db/km at the start of the '80s. In addition, a variety of optical transmitter and receiver devices and fiber connector devices have been developed which have demonstrated long life and excellent operational capability, and which are now being incorporated into many commercial and military communication and control systems in all parts of the world.
