French National Railways' sundries organisation Sernam was able to introduce guaranteed transits for ordinary rate sundries at the beginning of 1980, thanks to a programme of modernisation embracing automation of sorting at a number of depots. With traffic expected to rise by 1 per cent a year to 1982, further mechanisation of sorting is essential. In the 1980-5 period 10 sorting depots are planned to be automated, either extensively as at Rouen, or on a smaller scale as at Paris-Chevaleret.
