The possibility of reduction of the step error in an FM-CW radar altimeter is analysed by the author. Complete reduction of the error is, however, impossible due to undesired signals, i.e., the beat signal caused by the coupling between transmitter and receiver antenna and the signal caused by the deficiency of cancellation of the AM signal at the balanced mixer in the receiver. The reduction of the error by phase-modulation and Doppler effect is described.
