Discusses the use of electronic computers to control and regulate road traffic. The application of microprocessor technology in the peripheral equipment has greatly reduced the burden of data acquisition. The paper discusses StreeterAmet, a multifunction traffic surveillance system capable of recording data on volume, vehicle velocity, vehicle length and vehicle type in single or multidirectional lane patterns. The system consists of one or more TrafiCOMP 141 roadside recorders for gathering and accumulating traffic data and a TrafiCOMP 140 reader/programmer, which is used to program the recorder and recover the stored information using a self-contained cassette tape recorder. A single recorder can perform both counting and classifying functions.
