Examples of AC traction drives for railways are based on the Berlin local services. As early as 1903 a 93 ton-2200 kW unit with four motors developed a world speed record of 210 km/h. Principles of three electrical feed systems are summarised-namely direct supply, mixed drive and asynchronous motor. Examples of modern designs of metro-train are given, with some details of the motors, converters and thyristor control systems.
