Discusses the various errors in a gyrocompass arising from its internal imperfections and from environmental accelerations, which can, under extreme manoeuvring conditions amount to as much as 10 . However, all these factors can be mathematically expressed and physically measured, so that a small dedicated computer can be used to correct the basic compass, which will then read accurately to 0.3 in normal service and to 1 under extreme conditions. The method is shown to be cost-effective.
