A Zone navigation system developed by four major European airways, grouped together as KSSU in order to make optimum use of navigational data is described. The Collins ANS 70 navigation system for use in DC-10s is made up of a calculator receiving data from multiple sensors and a memory storing those data required to drawn up a flight plan. The principal mode of operation for calculating the position of the aeroplane is based on the use of inertial data with automatic radio regeneration at the transmission range of the VOR/DME transmitters and of arithmetic data. The system is a double one containing two independent circuits. Some original features of the system are discussed.
