The characteristics, effectiveness and cost of a number of different car ignition systems, including the conventional explosion engine, the inductive discharge systems, the transitional system and the capacitive discharge system are compared. The 'blue star' integrator developed and tested by Efosa S.A. of Barcelona is a commercial ignition system based on the capacitor discharge. The integrator comprises an antiinterference filter, a convertor producing a steady voltage of up to 380 V from the 6-12 V of the battery, a capacitor supplying the power for each spark which is fed by the convertor and triggered by a thyristor on the ignition coil whenever the points contacts open, a point current amplifier and a spark plug protection circuit. The characteristics of the integrator which gives a substantial improvement in performance when tested in Spanish car engines are described.
