The photographs which can be taken from ERTS are of great use in increasing geological and environmental knowledge. ERTS images covering 12000 sq. miles gives cartographers a chance to correctly map geological features. Normally this has to be done using composites of aeriel photographs each only covering about 10 sq. miles. Also with the aid of these large area photographs landforms and structures can be seen clearly. Mineral deposits may also be detected. Environmental applications include showing the damage done to land by tree felling, strip mining etc. Features of water and air pollution can also be clearly seen from the satellite. Photographs showing these applications are presented.
