The protection of airborne fragile equipment from shock and vibrational motions of a non-rigid supporting structure is of main interest. Mathematical models of vibration isolation systems with non-rigid foundations are assumed and their dynamic response employing various combinations of conventional isolators are studied. Different optimization techniques are developed to evaluate the optimum values of many variables involved for which the maximum transmitted motion to the equipment would be minimum over the considered frequency range. Theoretical expressions for the transmissibility of the equipment and the supporting structure, optimum values of mass ratio, stiffness ratio and damping ratio together with resonant characteristics of the system are presented. Design data are presented graphically for parameter variations which are sufficiently broad to encompass a wide range of practical engineering problems.
