Application of power electronics to rolling stock started in the early 1950s with the development of thyristors and diodes for electric power supply. In the field of chopper control, thyristors with higher withstand voltage and large capacity have been developed and a Freon gas boiling cooling system has been put into commercial use. Furthermore, GTO thyristors developed for electric power supply have been widely used as key components of chopper and VVVF inverters for controlling induction motors in recent years. As a result, the control equipment can be made small in size yet has a high performance. This paper describes the development status of power electronics devices in recent years, the products developed by the latest technology, and the future outlook in these fields.
